DARCEY BLUE :: BEE BALM BLESSINGS in WINTER

THE MEDICINE JOURNEYS: NOURISHMENT AND RITUALS FROM THE PLANTS

Last July, in the warmth and abundance of summer’s glow, I was excitedly gathering and preserving all the Bee Balm I could get my little hands on.  It was overflowing in every drainage of my Northern Arizona forest home.  Its magenta firework flower heads waving gently in the wind, mingling with the white beauty of yarrow, and deep purple spikes of vervain.  They were taller and fatter than any I had ever seen in my 13 years of herbal wandering and medicine making.   For years, oh how I would pray and scour the land hoping to find a stand that was big enough to harvest a few handfuls of the blossoms.  But it was just at the edge of its range, not getting quite enough water to be abundant, it was, in pockets, but as drought wore on, I did see them growing smaller and fewer in Southern Arizona mountain lands.

But it is a hardly mint family perennial, which does happen to transplant fairly well, and I was able to start a little patch in my garden.  But here, on the Colorado plateau, conditions are ideal for my friend bee balm.  And I was swimming in an abundance of it, with so much gratitude.  Because along with winter soups and hot steamy rooty herbal brews, bee balm is one of my go to winter allies, and oh- it is winter now! The freezing temperatures have taken all my herbs in the garden to sleep, and the land is covered over in snow, all I can pick these days is pinon and juniper (which do make nice brews themselves and are quite medicinal and wonderful in winter too!)  But the blessing of summer, is the abundance of winter stores....especially from my sweet and spicy friend Bee Balm.  Also known as Monarda, and sometimes goes by bergamot, oregano de la sierra, or sweet leaf, it is monarda fistulosa var. menthaefolia to which I am offering this ode.  There are many varieties of monarda, red flowered m. didyma grows in many gardens across the country, and there are countless other wild and spicy spp varying by region.

Just like its favored name in this region, oregano de la sierra, (mountain oregano), it has a delightful and strong oregano taste, aroma and spice.  And it is so lovely included in winter soups, stews, meat rubs, and sauces.  It is even delicious as a piquant and intense pesto when made in summer fresh, and frozen for later months.  But in addition to its yumminess as a wild spice and food, its medicinal value is unparalleled.   I could pare down my apothecary to just 10-15 herbs, and this is one I would NOT forgo.

2015-07-25 18.02.33-1.jpg

Bee Balm flower infused honey is a winter dream stirred into hot tea or water, soothing a sore throat, easing a cough or combating winter infections  I always make sure to have a jar of bee balm honey made from the bright pink flowers, and besides, who can resist something so beautiful?  You can make bee balm vinegar which is medicinal and tasty to sprinkle on beans and rice as well, leaving the beautiful flowers in the jar, or to use in salad dressings.

I also tincture up loads of the fresh leaves and flowers for an infection kicker outer.  Seriously, I haven’t ever seen this stuff not make a huge difference in varying forms of bacterial infections- be it a sinus infection, stomach flu, UTI, strep throat, and even vaginal yeast infections.  Much like the oregano oil sold in stores, it has many similar compounds and aromatic oils, but in a form that is far more tolerable to the body, and just as effective without burning your mucous membranes.  Typically if I’m working on treating infections at home, I take my herbal allies of choice hourly, or at the least every two.  Frequency is key here.  And i have noted over and over that infections treated effectively at home with herbs dramatically improve within 24-36 hrs, and fully resolve in about 4-5 days.  If that is not the case, then I tend to err on the side of caution and get medical assistance.  Especially if you are working with a client, friend or child.  Sometimes switching up the herbs or adding others to the protocol helps too.  For bee balm, 1 dropper hourly usually does the trick, and I often blend it with other helpers, like Alder, Usnea, Yarrow or Oregon Grape Root, or even with Elderberries if I’m dealing with a viral cold or flu.

2015-07-25 17.42.12.jpg

Bee Balm leaf and flower tea is just as effective at kicking the infectious bugaboos out, but the taste is quite strong and for many people unpalatable to intolerable, it is both spicy, hot, and medicinal tasting in tea blends.  Mixing it with lots of peppermint can take the edge off, but go slow with this form if you want to get your friends and family to love and use bee balm.  I generally include it in a warming, stimulating, sweat inducing diaphoretic tea blend at the first sign of a cold, sniffle, cough or flu.  Also when dealing with UTI or gut infections more fluids are effective.

1 pt  bee balm

1 pt yarrow

1 pt elderflower

3 pt peppermint

Steep 10 min and sip as hot as possible. Add honey if desired.

Raising the body temperature and supporting a healthy fever response is an effective way to treat winter illnesses.  Most bacterial and viral infections cannot continue to live and reproduce at temperatures higher than 99℉ in the body.  A fever is a sign the body is doing its job to combat the infection, not a sign that things are getting worse.  Granted, a fever that gets too hot can be uncomfortable (though the dangers may be overstated, check this out from Seattle Childrens Hospital), and using gentle diaphoretic herbs can help to open the pores and break the fever, bringing the temperature down just enough.  Gargling with the luke warm tea or even the tincture mixed in warm saline is a wonderful sore throat remedy, the whole plant is high in tissue numbing essential oils, similar to cloves.  I do also use the tea or tincture as a skin wash or compress for infections, boils, or fungus like athletes foot, ringworm, etc.  Also, used as a sinus steam, dried leaves crumbled into hot water, and inhaled, is an effective way to treat sinus woes, while taking tincture internally as well.

That all said, it’s one of those herbs you can just keep around, and put it in your food, and give yourself a sinus steam with, or add a muslin bag full in your bath, or just drizzle infused honey in your tea every day.  It’s safe, it’s rather yummy, and one of those plant friends you just want to play with every day or so during the cold season. It is a very heating herb, so folks who tend to get overheated or run hot may want to use it in moderation on a day to day basis.

Every time I look at those beautiful honey blossoms or sprinkle the fragrant leaves in my soup, I remember the glow and abundance of summer, and it warms my spirit and my body.  And I’ve turned to it so often in my herbal practice and day to day living experiences with infections, and I’ve seen it do amazing work, reliably.  And if it is not a plant that grows near where you live, it is easy to grow in a garden space, and can take quite a bit of heat and drought and still be potent and will grow back each winter from the spreading roots.  Noting, that as a mint family plant, it does tend to spread, so give it a nice roomy patch to grow, and you’ll have medicine to last for years to come!

ANGELIQUE ARROYO :: SACRED BOUNDARIES, PART 5

Boundaries are akin to a fence to protect the inside and out. How clear are you about who you are? What is it that you value? This is going to become more important the more times you’ve been around the sun. I haven’t forgotten the pain of not having boundaries, on a soul level. There are some things I am still healing through. In my life, this manifested through unhealthy parental figures, religion, and partners imposing their values. My philosophies come from deep experience and practice. I’ve journeyed with myself and many folks around naming personal values and learning how to articulate those in partnerships- from marriage to business. So if we can for a minute or more, I want you to grab a piece of paper, or download & print this Values Clarity Journal to name yourself and your values. This almost seems rudimentary, but trust me it is necessary.

Here is an example:                                                           Your Turn:

My name is Angelique Arroyo.

My values are:

transparency

honesty

truth

trust

generosity

openness

space

integrity

authenticity

family

You get the gist! I have many more values. What do you value? Take the time to list it and explain what that means to you. How do we set sacred boundaries around self if we are not yet clear it what it is that we are safe keeping? These are values that still stand even if all my roles ceased to be so be sure about YOU!

Sacred Boundaries  is a year-long, weekly series for building resilience On Path. Follow along, & start anytime. You'll know what's needed, now.

DARCEY BLUE - SEED MEDICINE

>>> click to download your medicine journeys journal prompts <<<

When everything becomes fuzzy and returns to its essential nature...

I’ve been gathering and gathering the seeds falling from the pines, pinyon nuts, daily.  I’ve been shaking loose the fragrant fruits of juniper. I’ve been shaking the fuzzy branches of Rabbitbush as I pass them on my walks, to loose those winged seeds flying.  I have been pulling on the browned tops of vervain and sprinkling the tiny little seeds along my daily trails. I harvested my precious Robins Egg Navajo maize after the tall stalks turned brown and dry.

IMG_4038.JPG

Tis the season of seeds, forming, falling, flying.  Storing the most essential nature of the plants intelligence, its soul directive.  And within each seed, tiny or large, is the abundant substance to sustain the seed through winter, and then sprout it into the damp earth and stretch upward toward the sun.

IMG_4039.JPG

Plants have no doubts or questions about their purpose, their shape, their unique imprint to live out in and through the world.  Though there are many individuals within one species of plant, each one grows in its own unique way.  And its message and its potential is stored within that seed.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my soul purpose in this life, and how for much of our early years we are busy creating a life, doing the deeds to make a living, raise the kids, or fit in with our chosen community.  (Even if all these things are aligned for us)  At some point, life, spirit, our soul, runs into that season, when things begin to solidify, or go totally fuzzy, sometimes both at the same time.  We arrive at this season of autumn, of beginning to turn to the downward, inward, earthward, soul journey.    This season of our lives, or even just of the year, asks us to let go, strip down all that extra stuff in place to create what we call our life, and return to our essence, our soul essence.  The SEED of who we are and what we are here to do.

The last weeks, and if I’m honest, the last year has a been a long journey to return to my essence and true nature.  To learn to let go of the trappings I’ve created for my ego - to feel valued, appreciated, safe - all the roles, all the identifications, all the shoulds, even some of the dreams and hopes I’ve held on to for my life.

What is my essence beyond my work as an herbalist?  What is my nature beyond the biophysical drive to partner and mother? What is my soul directive to express in the world in this lifetime?

A few days ago I found a pinyon nut that had fallen to the soil, cracked open and sprouted.  A tiny little mini pine tree sprout, perfect, with each cell knowing exactly how to express itself, toward the earth and toward the sun.  The seed providing the impetus and the nourishment and then, cracking open to express itself.   It seemed out of season, but it spoke to me deeply.

I keep picking up all these seeds, thinking about letting go of how and what I’ve been blooming my energy into, and becoming the pure potential of the next season, and deeper expression of my soul.

IMG_4037.JPG

>>> click to download your medicine journeys journal prompts <<<

Go, and find some seeds.  Acorns, or hazelnuts, or corn, or pinyon, or sunflower or tiny mustard seed.  Gather them.  Ask them to speak to you.  Each completely unique, a package of unique genetic expression.  Speak to different kinds of seeds.  What does the sunflower say?  And what does the acorn say?  The tiny poppy seed vs the corn kernel?

What can the seeds tell you about your essential nature?  What does the season of fuzzy falling seeds tell you about letting go of what your ego has created?

When you sit in silence in nature, watching all this, what message does your soul speak to you?  What is the SEED within you, begging to break open and express in this world your gift?

It may not have anything to do with your work or your roles, or your current hopes and dreams.

Take these seeds to your bed, place them all in a little pouch and wear them around your neck.  Ask the seeds to teach the seed within you.  Ask for these soul directives to reveal in dreams.

If it feels scary, or makes you want to cry, or asks more than you think you have, you may be onto something.

I don’t think this is something that necessarily happens in an instant, or even one season.  I’ve been stripping down for a few years, letting go of things, piece by piece, and feel as if I’m only just beginning to see and sense the essential seed nature within me, waiting to be expressed.  But it is enough, as we move into the new moon,  that I’ve made a new commitment, an investment, and a promise to my soul, to each day move closer and toward this essential soul expression.

What step can you engage to move toward your soul and essential nature?

DARCEY BLUE :: THE WILD HEART OF ROSE

IMG_2256.JPG

THE MEDICINE JOURNEYS: NOURISHMENT AND RITUALS FROM THE PLANTS

Last weekend I spent in retreat with women, sisters, mothers, and healers, focusing on the Heart. Not the wounded heart, which is an inevitable part of living, we all acquire wounds and heartbreaks, but working with calling in the Empowered Heart.  We worked with empowering our hearts through ceremony and plant medicines of many kinds.

Roses, especially the wild ones, but all roses really, are my favorite plant ally and medicine for the heart.  The rose itself reminds me of a beautiful and fragrant wild heart, opening its petals fully and sweetly to the world, while protecting itself just enough with its thorns, not in scary threatening way, but enough to give you a prickly reminder if you overstep your bounds or mindlessly tromp through the briars without attention.    The rose is a reflection of the perfect state of a wild, yet empowered heart, open, expressing itself fully, through beauty, aroma, petals and fruit, and teaches us to be sweet and open with a healthy measure of boundary and protection from those who would take advantage of such sweetness.

Here in the mountains of the southwest, wild roses bloom through the early summer, and now are nearly bare of leaves, but are flaunting abundant and gorgeous red hips, boasting a medicine full of nourishment for those who brave the thorns with awareness.  And truly, for me, the occasional prick from a rose thorn, though momentarily painful, is a reminder for me about how life’s little lessons, pricks, can help us to stay aware, and aligned with our hearts and souls, if we choose to allow the prick to bring us back into attention and connection with our heart, from wherever the little thorn came from, it is an opportunity to check in with ourselves.

Roses nourish, uplift, calm and support the emotional and spiritual heart.  I think of hawthorn as a more directly “protective” remedy for physical heart ailments, while rose supports the flowering, expression and vibration of an open, receptive yet protected heart.  I think I must use roses almost everyday in some form- mixed into my daily tea, a little rose oil anointing of my heart,  or a squirt of elixir now and again, just because.  Tending our hearts in the spirit of wellness and empowerment is one of the ways we can call in the energy of a strong, full, clear and open heart.  This is not to say we should ignore wounds or heartbreaks, because they happen, and have much to teach us as well, but when in a time of relative peace, aligning ourselves with empowered heart energy and positive vibrations, is a lot like speaking our affirmations daily.  Let Rose be the affirmation of self love, wholeness, beautiful expression and healthy boundaries we give ourselves everyday.

Roses are the medicine for opening our hearts, for inviting self-love, and for open hearted connection with a beloved or friend.  It is also a medicine for the acute care and pain of traumatic heartbreak, grief, and non traumatic emotional pain.  I often reach for the rose elixir to address emotionally based panic/anxiety attacks.  It works swiftly and sweetly. I can’t you how much rose I guzzled through my own despair and desolation and emotional hysterics after a particularly transformative and difficult break up, and everytime, just a few drops, or a squirt from the elixir bottle, I was immediately calmed, soothed, softened.  Or the time my transmission died in the middle of the desert in the summer, 100 miles from home.  I remember a friend had given me a tiny bottle of wild rose elixir to take home, and I sat on the curb waiting for a tow truck taking drop by drop of rose, helping me keep my cool,  (literally to not overheat in the sun) and not to have an emotional meltdown of epic proportions.

Rose is also a cooling remedy (which in the middle of a cold, damp winter might not be what you are after), and I drink rose petal tea or blended into teas all summer long to keep my fire element balanced.  If I ever feel like I’m getting hot and bothered, or have a client who tends to be red faced, stressed out, cranky and showing signs of internal heat, roses usually make their way into the bottle or tea blend. Or a spritz of rosewater in a glass of water, tea or bubble water always calms things down a notch.  David Crow once likened the energy of roses to moonlight, blooming in the cool, silvery magical light of the moon, their sweet fragrance gentle and healing.  Whenever I think of roses, I think of moon medicine, moon vibes, cycles, women, cooling, healing.

Then, I can’t forget the magic of anointing thyself with rose oil.  A tiny bottle of rose attar or rose otto can be extremely expensive, as it takes a whole 60,000 rose blossoms to make 1 oz of distilled rose essential oil, but anointing the heart chakra, the palms of the hands (there is a ayurvedic marma point/meridian of the heart that ends right in the palm of the hand - beautiful how our hands touching in love is connecting to the love in our hearts,) temples, third eye, or even the yoni invites the gentle and powerful loving touch of the rose into our psyche and energetic field while we chant a prayer or mantra of self care and loving compassion as we gently massage and anoint ourselves with rose medicine. I’ve been known to also slather my whole body in rose scented or infused oil, or take a bath in a strong rose tea when I need a hefty dose of comfort, compassion and self TLC.

Rose is such a versatile little simple medicine, yet full of complexity and layers untold.  Its simple to create your own little stash of rose elixir (recipe below), but also get some sweet smelling organic dried rose petals, and make some honey sweetened rose tea with a touch of cream, and find a little bottle of rose oil for those special moments when you want to really bathe your heart in the power of the rose.

>>> Rose Petal Elixir <<<

I love to use fresh wild roses and leaves for this, but any fragrant and organic roses will work, even dried ones.

You’ll need:

1 pint jar

Fresh roses/petals to fill the jar, densely.

or

Fill the jar ⅔ full with dried organic roses (petals or buds)

~16 oz brandy or vodka

optional (¼-⅓ cup raw honey)

In your jar place honey (if you choose to sweeten your elixir, i like mine a little bit sweet, helps the medicine go in!), then fill the jar with roses of choice. Pour brandy or vodka over the roses until it comes to the top of the jar.  Cap tightly and label.  You may want to place the jar in the moonlight, near a rose quartz crystal, or sing to it, or say some prayers of loving kindness.  Whatever your intention is with making your rose elixir, infuse into the medicine.  After 4 weeks, you may strain the roses from the jar with a cheesecloth, squeeze every bit of goodness you can from them, (save them to add to a bath, or make homemade chocolate with them!) and place the sweet elixir into a dark glass bottle with a dropper.  Label clearly.

Take the elixir as needed for emotional hysterics, anxiety, grief, heartache, self  love, compassion, heart chakra nourishment, heart opening, and beauty. I find 5 drops is effective, and sometimes I need to take 1 or 2 or more droppersfull.  It is a totally safe remedy that is hard to overdo.  It may be a little drying and astringent, which the honey helps to balance.

INSIDE #BRIGHTLIVELIHOOD :: RAISING SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS, CHANGEMAKERS & ACTIVISTS

IMG_6288.jpg

Obviously the current global economy is a reflection of board rooms without mothers & children: a kind of vacant leadership that's left their beloveds in search of their fortune. And now there is such movement around "The New Economy." I've long rejected this phrase, which is mostly useful for it's ability to point us away from the crises, & towards better language & wide awake ways - and there are so, so many.

I adore the language, & pretty much everything, actually, about the Evolving & Emerging Economies Jam. There are so many ancient, exquisite & sustainable forms of exchange evolving (like sisterly potlucks where someone gets $1k, for interest-free, trust-based loans, & local-business bartering), along with new, emergent technologies that do a few, simple, but mind boggling things, like dematerializing (think instagram: no film. no cameras. no paper. it's just an app!), demonetizing (think of the original facebook: it was free in all the ways), & democratizing (think uber: nearly anyone can become a driver & suddenly have a business. or air bnb: have room? have rental). We have every extreme of possible solutions, so it's an exciting time. At Jams, we create mini, week-long versions of the world we want to live in, by joining in small groups with diverse concerns & leadership, to unpack our life + work, & create deep, lasting relationships. Many of my closest friends & long-time collaborators were seeded in this expansive circle, 65 countries-deep.

Inline with right practice, we bring our mothers & children to the board room table. Or rather, we meet outside. At the river, on the deck, under the trees, and at the food table. We bring our retreat into living economy conferences like BALLE & Bioneers. We learn from & present to the larger community. The mothers & fathers (alongside our brothers & sisters) work, often with the important tools of voice, strings + percussion. And the children are close. Isn't that delicious? Yes. Economy-building informed by the real needs of  many generations. Because we are all accountable to each other.

So...on raising wee world stewards, baby bioneers, & future founders:

I think the formula's pretty simple. Give them nature. Give them community. Then stand back & watch how they do it.

ON SONGWRITING. AND SONGS. with MORGAN BOLENDER

“I LOVE EACH SONG AS I WRITE IT, BUT I HATE IT ONCE IT’S FINISHED. THE ACT OF WRITING A SONG IMPROVES MY SONGWRITING SKILL; BY THE TIME IT’S FINISHED, I CAN DO BETTER.
I’M TRYING TO THINK OF THE SONGS AS EGGS AND BABIES, NOW. THEY
LIVE WITHIN ME, SUSPENDED UNTIL FERTILIZED - THEN GESTATION AND EVENTUAL BIRTHING. BORN, THEY HAVE LEGS OF THEIR OWN. I CAN SUPPORT OR THWART THEM, BUT CANNOT DENY THEIR LIFE BEYOND ME.
IT’S THE ONLY MENTAL FRAME I HAVE THAT’S ALLOWING ME TO RECORD THE SONGS I ALREADY HAVE, AND TO BE LIGHTER ABOUT IT. THESE SONGS THAT I SOMETIMES HATE ARE DEEPLY LOVED BY SOME. THEY WANT TO PLAY THEM IN THEIR EARS OVER AND OVER AGAIN, SING ALONG WITH THEM AT SHOWS. I DON’T WANT TO STAND IN THE WAY OF THAT. IF I CAN WRITE BETTER SONGS, GREAT — SO I’LL WRITE BETTER SONGS. AND AGAIN. AND AGAIN.

FROM MOONRISE|13 :: THE DANCE - BUILDING RESILIENCE

Our New Hampshire New Moon Temple, August

Our New Hampshire New Moon Temple, August

"Abandon any hope of fruition."

- 1 of 59 lojong, or mind-training slogans from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition {passage meditations!}, from the gold deck above.

"The key instruction is to stay in the present. Don't get caught up in hopes of what you'll achieve and how good your situation will be some day in the future. What you do right now is what matters." - Pema Chodron

We-ellllll. Then what the fuck are we doing here?

WE ARE DANCING. IN THE GAP. BUILDING RESILIENCE.

I can't possibly count how many initiatives I've seen fall flat after a single broken agreement. How many movements die over missed expectations along the way. How much pain & suffering is carried - for decades - over desires for one way, when life went just 2 degrees astray. I can't possibly count how much has been lost over perceived failures, resignation, & self-abandonment.

And how many times I've seen non-attachment, release, commitment, & compassion lead to true triumphs of the human spirit.

These moments, these qualities of the Eternal, purify your container.  They are available always, at any moment. They are prayers. They are nouns. They are verbs.

Speak them. Do them. Hold them.

SO IN MOONRISE|13 WE ARE DANCING.

{non-attachment. release. commitment. compassion.}

Between stories :: ancient, archetypal, & ongoing.

Between our fierce desires & real life disappointments.

Between our vision & the daily urgencies that supersede our knowing.

Between drive, expectations & inspired, open, options.

Between the ancestors, dreaming thru us. Earth, dreaming thru us. The Eternal, dreaming thru us, & the raw, real smack of real life having it's way with us.

Between our privileges and the loss of connection to the Whole.

Between what you've already created, and what you're about to blow up. Make real. And take down.

THERE IS CLARITY, POWER & VELOCITY IN NON-ATTACHMENT.

If there is anything worth mastering, worth playing with, worth delighting in, it's being with the mystery of the dance.

Yes. More spiraling. In and out. From here, to there. Running from one end of the carousel, & back again.

We are creating clear, precise, measurable futures to give us a present container that's been attended-to, loved, and adorned. Then the Eternal does it's thing, & it's not exactly as we planned it. Do we stay On Purpose? Well, of course.

So we are talking about floating in an awareness that has humility.

We are talking about purposeful doing with a measure of dignity.

We are talking about being in the middle, and being On Path. On Purpose.

So we offer up our dance, the mystery, the attachment, the clarity, & a solid degree of separation from our deepest longings to the Eternal. That's who owns it, anyways.

And never working in a vacuum, we fill up with community. Because it's our companions On Path that make livelihood bright.

On August 22, we met the 1st Quarter Moon -

"I MATCH MY MIND, MY HANDS, MY VOICE TO MY HEART."

On August 26, we are at the Gibbous Moon -

"I DANCE IN PURPOSE AND NON-ATTACHMENT.  I SURROUND MYSELF WITH BELOVEDS WHO GET IT."

We are moving, now into the light of the Full Moon, August 29 -

"I ACCEPT THE GIFTS. I SWIM IN SELF-COMPASSION. I SEE WHAT'S NEEDED AND I PLAY WITH WHAT I HAVE."

Make a list of your attachments. A nice, (maybe long) honest list. Even if you have already done the work. Even if you have released the ages. Even then. The new ones. The current attachments that just must be, have to be, need to be.

Consider what it would look like to have a degree of separation. How can you create a little more space?

And. Who are your dancing companions?

TOKENS - YOUR EDGE. OUR EDGE. DRAGONFLY.

tokens :: banter & auguries between the women of moonrise | 13maya, & guides found on path

She only lives a couple of months like this, in flight. The majority of her work - underwater, in process, becoming, takes 2-4 years. She is a naiad for lifetimes upon lifetimes.

Q- There's more?! I'm sinking in to this new way of thinking, of doing, not entirely understanding what it all means, but loving that it's a bit nebulous, and feeling 100% right about it all...And every time I read this, I have no idea what it means - "what's your edge?" What does that mean??

When the naiad begins her climb to the surface, along some leafy ridge, or an undercarriage of granite, she is, still, submerged. She knows currents, not wind. She knows light, not clarity. Her wings are simply a backpack she carries, unused. The moment she crawls thru the surface of the water, she's at an edge, yes? And it's hers. Her threshold. Her initiation. A shift between worlds, with a clear before, during, and after. A bridge she's made in the moment of crossing. So that's one edge.

I remember a long, advanced yoga class, a decade ago. I would go for the relief of space, the quiet that comes from committing a few hours from family. I tended to slumber thru these classes - I had always been flexible, and really, I longed for the culture, music and community from the ethnic dance of my youth. American yoga seemed culturally diffuse and it had been years since a teacher inspired me. And then...I was caught. Doing something fully unconscious, obvious, and...well, just unconscious.  The instructor placed a hand at my sacrum and pushed me forward until I could barely balance. She stepped on my feet, and hands, awaking an entirely new center of gravity. I couldn't hang. She whispered into my ear, "for you, they need to be strength poses."

When I relied on my flexibility, I wasn't in a full practice. I was asleep. My edge began when I engaged my muscles and balance awake. Then, I was In. Once it took something.

So that's an edge.

The naiad, which looks much like a wet grasshopper-fish, finds her way to a protected spot in the sun, and begins the shocking work of splitting behind her eyes. An exquisitely intricate hinge breaks open, and she pulls her head thru, before taking an hour to squeeze, pull, and push a much larger version herself from the shell.  Crumpled petal wings somehow unfurl, and fill with crystalline, transparent glass. It's trepidatious, and the weather is a thing - too much wind, and they stick together, or fold into themselves all wrong. Waves threaten to smash her tail, as she pulses into full width + color. It's a birth both masculine, and feminine. It's a risk the entire time, and she must stay very still, and dry, for a long, long time. If there's a dock spider, mink, or other predator close, she's eaten alive.  So this birthing, this transformation, this patient process of constant work requires a bit of safe haven. If all goes well, there's flight. Dragon medicine. Predatation. Gifts of the ancient protectress.

ALL OF THAT. THE WHOLE OF IT. BIRTHING AS EDGEWORK.

The short answer is - your edge is your growing edge, where you might shrink or expand, and where you might build from. The real answer is, you choose the nature of your edge. There are external edges. Internal edges. Societal edges. We're in some of those, right now.

At any given moment, we can choose the edge we hold, but the truth is, they are all at play, all the time. The gifts of engagement are those of transformation. The gifts of boundaries are those of sustained performance. Personally. Communally. Systemically.

{that link goes to a free year of exquisite, important boundary work to go with your work here. yup.}

We don't have to seek the edge.  A diverse blessed village, in alignment with our future expression of right-livelihood, will call us out.  When we can no longer stay underwater, and the impulse comes to move to the surface, we will.

In 3 Rings: A Context for Movement-Building, below, I break down the three edges, or rings & four spheres of reality we work with in *GIVEN* and MOONRISE | 13.  Feel free to right-click, to download.

A RITUAL FOR RELEASING INTO THE WATERS

THE DISTILLED ASTROLOGY. RELEASING RESISTANCE. USING SPRING TIDES TO MAGNIFY THE LUNAR PHASE.

It's my birthday. {yay!}
So I'm tripling up the release of this rare, blue moon with a kayak to The Witches, a sunken island with so many epic, underwater boulders that tell me *They Know.* I can feel it as I glide over them. Let me come back to that.

Everyday my difficult practice, my submerge, is hard. I've begun looking closer at it. It's not actually cold once I'm in the water. There is a second of freeze, but I can't tell if it's even real. It's much colder, for longer, when I get out. THERE IS ALWAYS BLISS ONCE I'M IN. And power.  I'm thinking it's  The Flinch. Please download this ebook, take a read, and let us know what you think in the comments. This is where most of us get stopped, regardless of our edge. When I move thru it, I release it to the past. Somedays I just don't.

THE WITCHES.
quartz-amethyst-zinc-socialite-granite-gold {their granddaughters, above}

They Know what's happened on this land. They know we dance revolutions in our hearts | fight revolution in our communities, as we spin revolutions on this Earth.

They Know me when I was 20 and flew here after shutting down the shop & selling his Rolex to have $5000 to last us for eternity.

They Know me when I'm 24 with our first baby and he says I can't handle the pressure of family & wanna bolt & I kick him out of the cabin until he gets his act together.

They Know me at 38 when my plates spin rainbows before me. And I am dizzy.

They Know when we fall into the waters and are in over our heads. When we are saved. When something dies there.

They Know when we lift our chests to the sky and breathe oxygen into our hearts and feel like we've just opened shutters to our cells and know we can start anew.

They Know who was here before, the Abenaki, & what is lost.

They Know the vibrations of languages gone (here, Sokoki), and the nuances of culture hidden in those languages.

I am going to glide over them, with my *list of broken things I don't need.* They will swallow them whole and I will work, stroke, & smile my way home. Free.

The last time we did this, D & I together, it rained, hard, on the way back. Bald Eagle & her mate circled the skies, flying at each other, tumbling, claws-locked, releasing, again, and again, and again for hours. They had built a life together, and after decades, were still hot, still bothered, still fighting it out -for each other- in their skies. Salty tears mixed with rain & lake water, flying off our paddles.

My prayer for us all, this Full, Blue Moon:

May we be this IN. May we find ease in commitment, and partner with the work coming thru. May our ancestors' dreams know their truth in our ways. May right livelihood find her way into our hands, every single day. May it fill us up to overflowing. May we know plenty as enough. May  partnership feel it's way into our hearts, and our work be liberating.  May we know joy as peacemaking. May our art, our voice, our dinner with friends be peacemaking. May we be this guided. May we be this wowed.

A Passage Meditation:

Honoring you, my brothers and sisters.
I make peace with this land, and all that has happened here.

BLUE MOON IN AQUARIUS.

Aquarius is the Water Bearer. And the even-keeled bringer of practical magic. I don't know how it's been for you, but the last two days were hard on my heart as a mother. There is an astral circus in my sign. I've gotten so many texts from those feeling hurt & hardened on many levels. The blessings are many, and  the meanings too much.  And yet Aquarians are pragmatic. They say, handle your shit, with a kind of cool, clear love. They know we have *enough* for the Way.

So make your list. Of what's been broken. What's no longer needed. What's done. What's over. What's not working. What's already sinking as you float towards the surface.

PERSONALLY. SYSTEMICALLY. GLOBALLY.

And let water do the work.

~Write it out in watercolor pencil. Wash your face, cleanse your hands over the words.

~Bring her to the river. Kiss it all goodbye.

~Make a puddle. Let your mystic children stomp & slide.

~Take a pencil to tissue & flush it down. And out.

And finally fill a glass jar with clean water. Add crystals. Tape a prayer to the sides. Lay it over an image of your favorite flower. Leave it out tonight. Sip over the spring tides, over this next 7 days.

Depending on your location, the spring tides take place a bit before and the week following Full Moon & New Moon. At this time Earth lies directly between Sun + Moon, creating a double-tide, with extreme highs and extreme lows. And so it is with us. Take good care, and let it work for you.

xx, Maya

::: Meet our starskeeper, grounded in Spirit, culture, activism, and deep family :::

Mi nombre es Ariana. I was seduced by the science of synchronicity so I became a psychological astrologer. Ancient seafarers navigated the sea by the stars; I use them to access intuitive strategy for navigating in your sphere & anchoring in storms. For sea-nymphs & seafarers ready to reign.

THE DISTILLED ASTROLOGY

With Full Moons, feelings become the focal point. Our comfort zones, our relationships, our needs, what we mean when we say “home”, the climax of what was into what is. Aquarian energy is the brilliance of intentional detachment and objectivity. Heightened awareness is craved but not always convenient or conventional. This Full Moon is a contradictory combo that can open access to unequivocal freedom. The Freedom of no attachment to what isn’t on your high vibe.

Sometimes this translates as a series of rude awakenings. This may mean the release of a reality based on your perceptions and expectations. Release is a Full Moon word. And it sometimes looks like rebellion. Aquarius often gets the reputation of rebel, but they are never without a cause. They are all about cause. When the climax comes, center in this. Your Vision. Your version of the Future.

LUCID DREAMING. FUTURE-THINKING.

Yesterday, I sat on my dock and listened to our guests: science teachers & professors discussing "the edge of science," and a phenomena called "future-thinking."  You know, when we do crazy things, like musing over someone ahead of their call, and knowing what's going to happen next. Apparently this has been documented thru observation of the New York Stock Exchange. They spoke of how we generally access the past, and yet, we can "future-think" things. I stayed silent. Western Science has a funny way of being wowed at things it simply hadn't noticed. {and more because it's nearly impossible to hold a conversation with a toddler surrounded by water} I'm going to look it up, of course, as a #botaneconomist, {I made that up} and, living with empaths and intuitives, I am also wowed, all the time.

While children, as part of our cultural medicine tradition, my brothers and I were encouraged to dream aware, to be active members of our sleep. When awake, we experienced the full-sensory flight of astral travel. It's in this way, as a child in San Francisco, that I first saw the popping cardinal, rust and lemon tree cover, lakes, and pointed rooftops here in my New Hampshire home.  In the "vision," which included a cold lift + wind in my hair, I glided over white clapboard and shingled homes I now know so, so well.  I've talked about this memory for years, but it's not until this moment that I'm bringing these things together. {wow}

This morning there were raindrops, mixed in with the waves outside my window, and I breathed them in, while collecting bits from my softly lucid sleep.  In moonrise, we are calibrating our reticular functions for bio-effective movement building :: setting up our neurology to capture magic, and nothing less. I wondered, as I lay, if we should start with oracle readings.

Of course I wake up to this gift, a circle reading from our prolific sisterkeeper + legacy alumni Galia Alena.  She was clearly doing a bit of astral travel herself, from Oz, and right on time.

“Not all who wander are lost.” JRR Tolkein

There are dreams so precious and delicate, so close to ones heart, that they need the still darkness and space to blossom into their budding potential. They can feel too delicate to name and certainly to fragile to share, sometimes even with yourself. Your relationship to them is at once tenuous and true; they are the seeds of potentiality that lie in the space that connects you with all. They are your gifts to the world and from the world.

What delicate dream are you nurturing and protecting, what wish is held safe and close to your heart?

This card, La Folle, invites you to think about your own path and wanderings. Are you willing to listen to the quiet space within that beacons you down roads of your own making? Do you give free space to wander through your own dreamscapes? Do you allow yourself to leave the path behind in order to find your way home to yourself? What do you need to take with you? Who are your faithful allies who will keep you company on your journey? What do you need to unpack to lighten your load and free yourself for the great adventure that is your own life? Drop into your body and check in with how you are feeling at the thought of new beginnings - is their excited anticipation, quiet mystery, edges wanting to be stretched or remembering of wisdom in your bones. Blessed sister, its your own personal guiding star that calls you to begin, begin with this moment, where you are, the present. The present is always a beginning, always a choice, always an invitation, begin begin begin.

“In the middle of the journey of our life I found myself within a dark woods where the straight way was lost.”  Dante

TOKENS - DESERT MOUNTAIN MAHOGANY

tokens :: banter & auguries between the women of moonrise | 13maya, & guides found on path.

Q. "I know what we have is working. People are so hungry for this work, they are coming to us in droves. The problem is that we can see where it's going, & we've kinda already done it. And it feels like - "Is this it? We just keep sharing others & little pieces of our work & what, people are inspired?" We see the end & I'm getting bored."

I look up, and there's 35 feet of glistening, silver, fuzzy feathers. I honestly giggle, thinking, "honestly, WTF, how can this not be for the amusement of humans? Spirit is so amazing to make us gifts like this." The light is doing crazy things to the leaves in this tree. She's dancing.

Q. "The truth is, I have the basic support I need for my work. But if I had more support, I could take this to an entirely different level of contribution. But that means changing my foundation."

I want to somehow bring this tree home, & love her up.

>>> if you want more support + attention, capture more light. bring more beauty.<<<

A breeze comes thru and the feathers begin to lift, sway, and twizzle into the soil around me.

Holy shit. They're seeds.

THE WAY YOU'VE DONE THINGS MAY OR MAY NOT BE IN LINE WITH YOUR INNATE BUILDING GESTURE, WHICH IS SOMEHOW BOTH SPECIFIC & UNLIMITED.

HAVE YOU BEEN DANCING + FLOATING, HUSTLING, OR RUNNING? HAVE YOU BEEN DIGGING DITCHES, OR PILING SANDBAGS IN FRONT OF A SQUALL? THERE'S A VAST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SELF-EXPRESSION & SURVIVAL.

LOOK AT WHAT'S WORKED FOR YOU, NOT FOR OTHERS. AGAIN, TALENT + ACHIEVEMENT IS DISTINCT FROM INSPIRITED IMPULSE.

WHEN DID YOU GO INTO FLOWMENTS, WHERE TIME DISAPPEARED? THOSE ARE THE MOMENTS THAT THINKING STOPPED. THOSE ARE THE MOMENTS THAT YOU WERE IN YOUR ZONE, A SUPPORTED CONDUIT, WORKING WITHIN YOUR INNATE GESTURE.

IF YOU'RE BORED, THEN THERE'S OTHER ASPECTS OF YOUR EXPRESSION THAT NEED ATTENDING. CONSIDER  EACH ASPECT OF YOUR WORK, AND FIND SOMEPLACE TO BRING BEAUTY. WHAT CAN YOU MAKE SHIMMER? BRING MOVEMENT. WHERE CAN YOU BRING DANCE? BRING FOCUSED PURPOSE. WHERE CAN YOU CLARIFY ROLES, & AIM YOUR SIGHTS?

THEY ARE SEEDS.

Desert Mountain Mahogany, in fact. Each feather, slightly distinct in curve + curl, is not just a lit dancer. She's the promise keeper of an entire organism, that will, in turn, create more seeds, more potential than could ever be fulfilled.

IMAGINE YOURSELF A TREE. YOUR SEEDS (IDEAS-PROJECTS-MOVEMENTS), IN THEIR MULTIPLICITY, ARE STILL DISTINCT. DIFFERENT IDEAS, & DIFFERENT POSSIBILITIES. DIFFERENT INVENTIONS, COMMUNITIES, PRODUCTS, & DIFFERENT FORMS OF CONTRIBUTION. AND YET, YOUR SEEDS ARE STILL INFUSED WITH THE PROMISE OF YOUR DNA, YOUR WAY.

your gesture is how you move thru the world, the shape you make when you grow, the tracks you leave in the space around you. desert mountain mahogany shows us how her beauty, how she dances, is also how she attracts light, pollinators, and spreads her magic. her success is in her being herself.

THE INNATE GESTURE (SHAPE THRU WHICH ONE MOVES OVER TIME) OF YOUR SEEDS-IDEAS-PROJECTS-MOVEMENTS, ARE ALSO THE WAY THEY ARE SHARED, THE WAY THAT THEY THEY SPREAD, THE WAY THAT THEY ATTRACT OTHERS, THE WAY THEY DANCE, AND THE WAY THEY FIND THEMSELVES IN FERTILE SOIL.

unless. your roots, core or members are not well enough to proliferate. maybe there hasn't been enough fertile soil. not enough sun, or water. or the earth was somehow poisoned.

the gift of this moment, is to heal. check in with your home soil now. is it nourishing? truly - do you have the nourishment you need for what's wanting to grow? is there poison? think of the purity of organics. what's not clean enough, bright enough, fresh, local & vibrant enough for your innate expression to persist?

are you, your team & your loved ones local enough in your relationships, or do you send each other non-local? does something need to be healed? is your core strong? (literally) make a plan. how about what you feed your heart, your hands, your ears & your eyes? is it of the quality you need to grow not just yourself, but an heirloom version of yourself?

Q."I'm overwhelmed by the multiplicity of possibilities. These ideas, they come fully intact. My friends have more fucking proposals than I can begin to wrap my head around. And I know exactly what they need to do to get them started, or to push them to the next level. What I can't wrap my head around, is what I should be doing. Which ones are the right priorities? Or how do I help them in a way that pays me enough & gives me enough credit to move on? I want to build out my income streams."

the truth is that nature is overwhelmingly abundant. there are more seeds than will ever be planted. that's all. it's not personal. if you choose to focus, then you can directly nurture and nourish each seed.

PICK THE TREES WITH FUTURES YOU WANT TO SEE.

{and let the rest fall away.}

DON'T DO ANYTHING, ANYMORE, FOR SHALLOW RETURNS. FEED YOUR WHOLE SELF, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT YOU HAVE TO OFFER THE REST OF US. WE DON'T WANT TO CONSUME OR SUPPORT ANYTHING LESS.

FILL UP. OPEN YOUR HEART CHAKRA TO THE SUN. DANCE. TWIZZLE YOUR WAY INTO PURE + FERTILE SOILS.

{you already know what to do}

TOKENS - WHITE CLOUD POPPY

tokens :: banter between the women of moonrise | 13, maya & guides found, on path

"I guess it's hard for me to understand what of my thoughts, feelings, perceptions, sights, sounds, heartbeats are indeed conversations."

White Cloud Poppy has already appeared in a rushed crowd on my right. I've never been able to figure out exactly when she's coming. She just appears, 1' tall, then 3. Then 5 - and she's over my head.

she's aiming for the sun.

YOU DECLARE THE CONVERSATIONS BY PLACING YOUR AIMS. OFFERING ATTENTION, MAGNIFYING, BEING A SOURCE OF NEW LIFE + NEW LIGHT, SO THAT WE KNOW, TOO.

that's a lot of power, don't you think? it is. choose wisely.

"...this is the path I see to a more exponential empowerment worldwide. Maybe not though. Many times I like just living this life present, quiet, garden, chickens, goat (if I'm lucky:) ). With my little ones, in my community is enough. And then it's not again."

She's effervescent. just a flower, maybe. simply. and then again... now 6', she towers over me, a sky-field of bright, fluffy, sunny-side up blooms.

YOUR CONVERSATION IS YOUR GESTURE IS YOUR WAY IS THE SHAPE, SMELL, TASTE, & THE FEEL OF YOUR TIDES, WHEN YOU SEND YOUR RIPPLES OUT INTO THE WHOLE.

{and what possibility are you dropping, into our seas?}

She is a conversation for the light. she's food for the honey-makers, who dip, & sway, dizzy & over-heavy with vivid yellow dust from tip to tip. it looks like a microscopic holi fest. they aren't collecting pollen. they are dousing themselves with it.

SO IS IT ENOUGH? YES. WHAT EVER YOU'RE DOING IS PLENTY. IS IT FULFILLING? WELL. WE SPIRAL IN, & WE SPIRAL OUT.

Her gesture is that of hearty, substantial light & joy. she's tough in her happiness.  and, her roots are found in the dark. she feeds off humus.

don't overthink the nature of your conversation or gesture. just feel into your body, & live with the questions of it. let your roots, & your vision & your everyday quiet be enough.

JUST FOLLOW THE ENERGY.

{she's aiming for the sun.}
