ANGELIQUE ARROYO :: SACRED BOUNDARIES, PART 5

Boundaries are akin to a fence to protect the inside and out. How clear are you about who you are? What is it that you value? This is going to become more important the more times you’ve been around the sun. I haven’t forgotten the pain of not having boundaries, on a soul level. There are some things I am still healing through. In my life, this manifested through unhealthy parental figures, religion, and partners imposing their values. My philosophies come from deep experience and practice. I’ve journeyed with myself and many folks around naming personal values and learning how to articulate those in partnerships- from marriage to business. So if we can for a minute or more, I want you to grab a piece of paper, or download & print this Values Clarity Journal to name yourself and your values. This almost seems rudimentary, but trust me it is necessary.

Here is an example:                                                           Your Turn:

My name is Angelique Arroyo.

My values are:

transparency

honesty

truth

trust

generosity

openness

space

integrity

authenticity

family

You get the gist! I have many more values. What do you value? Take the time to list it and explain what that means to you. How do we set sacred boundaries around self if we are not yet clear it what it is that we are safe keeping? These are values that still stand even if all my roles ceased to be so be sure about YOU!

Sacred Boundaries  is a year-long, weekly series for building resilience On Path. Follow along, & start anytime. You'll know what's needed, now.

Sacred Boundaries For Self

We’ve been engaged in sacred boundaries in the sphere of the sacred, last time you created a collage that maps where you are at. In my work as an activisionary we talk about what it would look like to live outside of the striving/or the struggle. This very time driven existence that demands that we stick every experience into a formula for action, how do we unplug from that very formulaic why into the beingness of our own experience. I often share with folks when I provide a structure for movement that if it prevents you from actually doing it, drop it. Let it go. While parts of our human experience desire to name and label, it is not always in our best interest. Can you engage and set boundaries around the sacred for its own sake, without a prefabricated trending agenda? Can you dance in the tension of creating space for the unknown to be nourished? Why unknown? Because you can’t assign a name to that which has many and is none. In that space you will find solace and fullness because it holds capacity for all of you.

I recommend you put together all these parts and read it again but all at once. When you are done…gather your sacred space making tools, be sure to ground and plug in. Grounding through your root chakra and plugging in through your crown, this stabilizes movement as energy and messages flow. When ready engage in the following questions…allow silence and stillness.

What have the boundaries around your practice in relationship to the sacred been?

What is in need of repair and reframing? Listen for what the essence in you needs at this season for nourishment..these messages come not from the thought but from plugging into the sacred current.

What is coming up?…I imagine this piece of myself as a being and I often start with a teary I’m so sorry, I love you. This happens because I recognize that for me it can get so busy and move so fast. There are times I choose the busy over the slow..over the sacred, ”I can’t stop this must get done”. Or sometimes the plan gets in the way and that is when I know, I need to let go. My offering are my tears and a heart hungry to just sit and be.

I Wait

I wait for you at the edges

I watch in tearful expectation, maybe today

Maybe today you’ll be with me…

I don’t want you to do..anything, just be with me

When you lay down exhausted and feel a warm sensation envelope you, that’s me loving on you

I don’t fit into the boxes or the list, or the next asana sequence

I’m the hunger inside that makes you cry at mountains and weep at flowers

I watch you as you try to learn some new way to engage me..but all I want is for you to be with me

I have the answers you’re looking for

I’ve tried to tell you they are within

What am I? I am the galaxy in a cell

I am the rush of rivers

I am the ecstasy in the release of an orgasm

I am the breath of a baby

I am night sky

I am the sunrise

I am the twinge in your chest that squeezes tight at the morning light

I am waiting for you….

I am the essence that holds the secrets of the universe and I dwell in you

I wait

Now go into your Moonrise planner and plug in the space to meet with your sacred essence and guard those boundaries. This is very important…if you need to put up mantras or prayers to remind you of the why this matters, do so. And when not if, but when you loose your way and the rush of the day takes over…come repair your boundaries and mend the fence. Come home.

Next stop Sacred Boundaries for Self….xo

Sacred Boundaries - For It's Own Sake!

In a synagogue there is a flickering light by where the Torah (Jewish Scrolls) are kept. It is known as the aish tamid (the eternal flame). Having it by the Torah Scrolls is important. It is a symbol of the fire that burned in the Holy Temple. It is a reminder of the eternal flame; the essence/spark in us is never to go out.

This is an example of protection, as an aligned filter for what comes in. Whether beliefs or voices, this relationship to the sacred is about YOU and the Divine. An intuitive dance. There should be no external demand that doesn’t align with what feels right and natural to you. Maya calls this pre-digested ritual: the dance between what we take in because another proclaimed it so and what is our innate expression. Tools serve to support movement and should never beabsolute, unquestionable sources. This is a part of the why of boundaries, because no one should have absolute access or the power to dictate how this looks. This flame/essence/divine that is the universe, that is you, should solely be crafted in way that honors who you are and the seasons you are in.

What is the practice/ceremony/ritual that you have around this? Is it working (achieving the intention desired)? Each season brings us different gifts and movements- what worked once may not work now. Take a moment to asses what is present, to name it:  get your favorite art tools and create a collage of the season you are in. Pull out images of what is going on right now...projects, family, your health, etc. Sometimes there is an underlying current going on with us that we don’t quite notice, where we are reacting and not responding to our own needs. Creating a collage allows you to see what is moving and how you can best support yourself with practice/ceremony/ritual around the sacred essence in you. When you are done with your collage, put it somewhere to sit so you can see it, be with it….

Sacred Boundaries - For It's Own Sake!

The ache wouldn't go away. I'm moving slower now, I'm breathing deeply. There are still red patches on my skin from the poison ivy; the body doesn't forget as easily. The Common Blue Forest Violet, Viola Papilionaceaem, is a welcoming crowd. They are smiling - they know what I've just walked in to. In that moment the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. All of a sudden I feel like I want to cry. The vibration is off the charts. I'm close to the sacred source. I hear words whispered, "For it's own sake..."

And I bow.

It's a co-creative dance between us and the divine, the divine in us, and a series of relationships we hold. I've been exploring the concept of something existing "for it's own sake." To protect the sacred source of your being...to put down boundaries, for sustainability. To engage in you, the sacred expression of the divine. All that is. This must be done for it's own sake - in it's own merit. I will protect the essence because it is the essence.

Last time we talked about the space in-between. I was grouchy this morning - I felt pressure and no space. There were things I needed to do and my mind wanted to get to it. But my soul said go slow...several interruptions came my way. I felt short and annoyed. I'm not going to be able to get my slow time. Am I going to be able to eat?!

So I went to my altar and lit the candles. I made slow time. I sat and said some prayers, I shuffled my tarot cards. I have four decks that I pull from. My boundaries around the sacred look like not doing anything else until I at least light the candles. Sometimes I just need to be still to recognize and honor the sacred...the essence that dwells in me...

How do we protect this flame? How do we honor something for it's own sake just because IT IS and that renders it precious. Ceremony and ritual are part of how we enter a space in time.

Boundaries begin with your Inner Sanctum: Your Essence

I lifted myself off the ground, slowly. As I did, I felt something touch me gently. Jewelweed presented itself as a gift for my itchy hands and arms. My senses heightened as I recognized the lessons...where the flower lives can not be taken for granted. There are signs all over to protect the gift. I thought to myself about how many times I take gifts for granted, how often I leave my boundaries unattended or ignore the signs. In this journey I’m on the outside, I instantly feel an ache in my heart. I see, what do the boundaries protect for me? How? Where?

DARING TO SET BOUNDARIES IS ABOUT HAVING THE COURAGE TO LOVE OURSELVES, EVEN WHEN WE RISK DISAPPOINTING OTHERS. ~Brene Brown

Gather your medicine and tools that help create sacred space. Be sure to have a candle. Call in the corners and above and below. State your willingness to see and act on what is shown.

Ally Possibilities for Boundary Work

Citrine Crystal: Cleanser and regenerator. Absorbs, transmutes, dissipates, and grounds negative energy and therefore is protective for the environment. As an aura protector, it acts as an early warning system so that action could be taken to protect oneself.

Lavender (Herb & EO -essential oil- ): Stability and calm. Attracts energy of a high vibrational nature. Increases awareness and also offers protection.

Chakra: Crown & Solar Plexus

I pulled a card from the Goddess Guidance Oracles deck. It was Ishtar-Boundaries. “Love yourself enough to say no to others’ demands on your time and energy.”

Talking about this never gets old and there is always something new to learn. I want to start with talking about the boundaries that support you. You as in the essences that dwells within from which all creation comes. This infinite being has no labels, titles or roles-it is ALL. While this is an unlimited resource, it dwells in a finite body. And while we can transcend, we must honor the full spectrum of our beingness.

I’ve found that folks that are awake to multi-dimensional living can create and move, even when we are asleep. I know some of you know about that! The question I started asking myself is where is the space and when do we ground? The protection of this sacred center from where all that you are comes from calling for space. While that energy is limitless it is encased in a human body that meets vibration for vibration. We live on a planet of seasons and cycles. How are we creating practices that offer us space and breath? What are your practices and are you okay with just being?

I’ve become sound and information sensitive (I’d like to call this essence abuse :)). There was a call to accountability for not having enough space. Space between me and the boundaries; I’ve been repairing the fence. Some parts are stones and others wood. I show up for the work- at times with sorrow in my heart for how I haven’t honored myself...because of how much I pull and how many energetic checks I write (everything, like threads in a tapestry, holds energy).

This is why we have the gifts of stillness that many belief systems offer us. It is the space between the breath that we are looking at. So here are some questions for us-

What is the space between you and your day?
How much are you creating? How much is on your plate?
What are you nourishing your essence with? Be mindful with the line between the nourishment and another thing to do or be!
How much space/time do you give yourself around transitions, change, and seasons? There is so much noise/busyness in our fields, minds, eyes, etc. To allow space is to honor the cleansing and clearing process.
How do you create space to hear your own voice?
How do you come home back to center, even if that requires being misunderstood or what sometimes we perceive as missing out? In a Women’s Leadership Circle I teach locally, the sista’s shared FOMO with me. I was ecstatic! Fear. Of. Missing. Out. Are your personal boundaries nebulous because you are suffering from FOMO?

If we are going to continue to show up in our lives and communities, doing the work we love and loving on our people, we must first do that for ourselves. We must acknowledge that our sustainability impacts the sustainability of that which we create. It is time. I don’t say this from some removed place of arrival, but from a very present acknowledgment of the journey and what is at stake =the future. The power of practices that support our beacon and vibrational capacity become even more imperative as you expand into generational vision.

I sought a rare plant whose flower can heal nations, whose roots are magic, whose leaves cover many.
I walked seeking the markings to tell me the way. It was here I learned of boundaries...the gift the forest gave me.
It was at the center of this forest where the plant made her home.
I found a spectrum of boundaries....some made by mother spider fine lines of liquid gold.
I came upon tree limbs that gave themselves willing in the storm to mark the limits. All along the way whispers of holiness traveled in the air...take care, take care.
In my eagerness I tripped over a log into a patch of ivy...and the itch came upon me. Again, take care, take care....treat with sacred open protection....

Boundaries. The line that marks the limits of an area- a dividing line. We live in the land of in- betweens. The dichotomy of acknowledging that everything is sacred while practicing protecting the sacred. In this series we are digging deep with boundaries in different spheres of our lives acknowledging that open protection is necessary for sustainability, posterity, and longevity. As legacy builders we are building multi-dimensionally, so name your directions as work. Call in your allies, your medicine...the totems that watch over you.

Both my social justice circling and work with womyn continues to affirm the necessity of this conversation. We must clear up the misunderstandings that there are around boundaries. They are for the protection of both inside the area and outside. Boundaries are not static-for each season and area of our lives we must be willing to fluidly adjust as needed. As a legacy builder, I take very seriously the boundaries I set around myself, my work and the vision.

Boundaries. The line that marks the limits of an area. A dividing line. The dance of boundaries is sacred. As you continue to align to your work and cast widely, your boundaries will support and protect your movement and legacy. In this series we will work on boundaries for the sacred, the self, the home, the community, and the legacy. We will deconstruct myths and erect boundaries in alignment with where we are at with what we’ve learned, they also serve as a remembrance. We will talk about cost, negotiables and non-negotiables. We’ll dig in to the discomfort and what it means to be guardians and conduits. Our capacity to throw down the dividing line with intense integrity can transform our movement quantumly.

Let our journey begin.

A~
